My First "Poem"
a letter never received ...
“I’m sorry.”
The two words that are usually said after doing something wrong.
The two words that people don’t really like to say.
The two words that are said with an actual meaning of apology or can be said with no remorse at all.
I'm sorry you couldn't live a longer life.
You were too young and playful to not live up to your full years.
Although you were fed and treated well, I'm sorry you didn't have a nice backyard full of grass but instead dirt.
Although you had a pool to jump in whenever you want, that didn't change the fact you dealt with bugs irritating your skin.
I'm sorry you were too big of a hassle for my parents to train to have you inside.
I'm sorry I was too little to go out on my own and try to change all those things for you.
I'm sorry I won’t be able to find another beautiful, white neck, golden brown, boxer dog that I got to name Jade.
Ever again.
“I'm sorry.”
The two words people tend to say after it's too late.
Senior year of high school, Public Speaking was my elective and this class is what ignited my interest in writing and poetry. The prompt was to write an apology letter. Little did I know this activity was going to make me sob and give me such inspiration. My teacher was so genuine and nonchalant, I am forever grateful for being taught by him. Unfortunately, he passed away I believe during covid, and I wish I could've been brave enough during high school to thank him for being kind.
I have many "too late" moments. I hope as this new year goes on, I refrain from being regretful.
